Every now and then the Hen Central team get chatting to a supporter who they just know is a real star.
A truer word could not be said for our next interviewee, Kat Shovlin, who not only supports the BHWT with everything she does but regularly visits schools and care homes with her feathered friends to convince everyone else how great they are. In addition, she held the most incredible hen party to celebrate our one millionth hen being rehomed and even trekked to London with our CEO Jane with her hens to appear on the Jeremy Vine show this month.
1. How did you first come across the BHWT?
I was searching online for information about hens and your website immediately caught my eye —it looked like so much fun, and I was hooked! I had rehomed hens in the past, but discovering BHWT took my passion to another level. I started using the site to educate myself, donate to the amazing cause, and spent way too much on the online shop! I also joined the Egg Club at the same time. Jane’s incredible work was a huge inspiration for me, and being part of this community has been such a rewarding experience.
2. What is your history with chickens, i.e. did you keep hens before finding out about the charity?
I had kept chickens before I knew about the charity; my chicken-keeping journey actually started when I began looking after my neighbour's hens. From there, I inherited quite a few, and my love for them grew. That experience is what sparked my passion for caring for these amazing birds! I currently have 14 beautiful hens.
3. What is it you love so much about hen keeping?
I love how clever and affectionate hens are. Each one has such a unique personality, and it's heartwarming to see how loving they can be. I also love sharing their stories with others, being their voice, and supporting the charity's mission. It’s incredibly fulfilling to advocate for them, and I always encourage others to consider rescuing hens. There’s nothing more rewarding than giving these amazing birds a second chance at life and seeing the joy they bring.
4. What inspired you to want to hold a hen party for the charity?
I’m passionate about raising awareness for the incredible work you do. I’m always telling anyone who will listen about the charity, and I believe it’s so important to educate people, especially children, about the value of saving hens. I also wanted to share Jane’s inspiring story and highlight how she and her amazing teams up and down the UK have saved over a million hens. What a remarkable legacy! It’s an honour to support such a meaningful cause.
My hens have been a source of comfort and support, keeping me grounded through some of the tougher moments in life. Hosting this hen party is my way of giving back to a cause that means so much to me, and to show my appreciation for everything the charity has done to help hens and their keepers alike.
