Morrisons first in the UK to sell carbon neutral eggs

The environmental impact of food production is a huge talking point across the globe, with 25% of greenhouse gases being attributed to the practice annually. With this in mind Morrisons recently announced that it is the first supermarket to offer a carbon neutral egg.

The ‘planet friendly’ eggs are laid by hens fed on a soya-free diet of insects which, in turn, feed on food waste from Morrisons bakery, fruit and veg sites.

Morrisons say the farm where the eggs are laid also has a wind turbine, solar panels and a carbon sequestration programme to offset any remaining emissions.

The eggs will be the first to feature a green version of the red British Lion egg stamp, denoting their environmentally friendly status.

Did you know...

...the stringy white bit in an egg is called a chalazae. It comes off each end of the yolk and attaches to the inside of the shell as a way of keeping it central. It’s also an indicator of an egg’s freshness – the more noticeable it is, the fresher the egg.
