Helping hens across the board

We created a six-year strategy in 2019 spanning six years and have fulfilled almost all our objectives.

These were:

1. To increase the number of hens we rehome

2. To build solid and trusting relationships with the egg industry

3. To build an education centre for the benefit of our hens

4. To improve pet hen health

5. To champion small flock free range egg production

6. To spread our work globally

We surpassed our expectation in rehoming hens, reaching our one millionth ahead of plan.

And whilst it took time, the relationship we now have with the industry is one of trust and collaboration. Our education centre was stalled due to Covid, but it’s built, it’s functioning, and we will be working towards improving the service it currently offers with courses aimed at hen keepers, vet nurses and potentially vets. Our influence on hen health is ongoing, but to give you an idea of what we do, in August we provided guidance and support on 187 calls. These enquiries mostly came from the UK but also from India, Germany and Hungary in that one month alone. Remember we are there to help any hen. The free-range sector has grown from 32% in 2004, before the charity began, to 75% in 2023 and small flocks are becoming increasingly popular as are sales of mixed weight eggs, resulting from our successful campaign, ‘Size Matters’ in 2021.
