Spring Chickens

It’s spring! New life is bursting all around and longer lighter days mean more time can be spent with our beloved feathered pets.

Here are some tips for your flock to ensure they all become happy spring chickens.

Check your automatic timers. The clocks go forward one hour on 31st March and as the days are longer your girls won’t want their coop door shutting too early. It’s also a good time to check your perimeters and any electric fencing. Clear away any overgrowth that could cause the power to fail and ensure your battery is fit for purpose.

Spring also means Easter

Eggs laid by your hens are healthier and every bit as special as the chocolate versions! Make sure you look after your fresh eggs by doing a deep clean to your nest boxes, refresh the bedding and create a spa experience by adding diatomaceous dust to the nesting material. That way your hens get lush feather treatment whenever they nestle down to lay.

Talking of spa experiences

Hens love nothing more than to create a dust bath under a shrub or in your rose garden. Setting up a child’s paddling pool and adding dry soil, wood ash, sand and diatomaceous earth will give them that special dusting space, spa experience and may save your precious seedlings at the same time!

And finally SPEND TIME WITH YOUR CHOOKS!

Sitting with your hens and watching them for a while gives you the opportunity to notice any issues they may have. Time spent with your flock will also benefit your mental health. Share with them the pleasure of the first spring sunshine and savour the fact that you have given them the life they are now enjoying.
