Poultry Vet Guide Is A Hit In The Us Submitted By Rosemary Keynes

Henspiring a generation of volunteers

Nine years would be considered a long stint for any of our incredible volunteers, but even more so for someone who is only 16 years old.

Madelaine Wortley has spent more than half her life helping at rehomings in Newark, having begun when she was just seven.

Alongside her mum, Sam, who is our Newark Co-ordinator (although watch out, it sounds like Madelaine is after your job!), Madelaine started out by sitting with hens on the day to make sure they were okay.

Her passion for our feathered friends, and animals in general, has only continued to flourish and Madelaine has now decided to study Animal Management at college with a view to one day becoming a vet nurse.

Having recently paid her first visit to a commercial egg laying farm, Madelaine says she will continue volunteering for as long as she can.

“I just love helping out and talking to people who come to rehome the hens,” she said. “Some of my teachers have even come to get some which is really cool. I am saving chickens’ lives and when you get home and sit down after a rehoming it is such a good feeling knowing what you’ve done.”

Thank you so much to Madelaine, and to every one of our 1,200 volunteers. We are indebted to you.
