It mightn’t be the most glamorous gift, but we were nonetheless chuffed when family-run S&G Carpets in Torrington donated lino for our hen transportation crates. The donation is part of a pilot exploring how businesses can help provide the practical kit our rehoming teams rely on – from flooring and crates to power washers, disinfectant and PPE. The dream? Eventually, fully donated rehoming kits around the country, freeing up more of our funds to help hens.

We’ve all bored our colleagues senseless talking about hens – but Xoserve employee Sandi Bradshaw went one better and persuaded her workplace to support them too. Every year, staff at Xoserve – who manage vital data for Britain’s gas market – nominates and votes for charities to support. Sandi, a huge BHWT supporter, put our name forward and, happily, her colleagues agreed. After donating £990 to BHWT in 2025, Xoserve followed up with a fantastic £1,317.50 this year. Could your workplace help out too? Many employers offer charity nominations, Payroll Giving, matched giving, fundraising pots or volunteering schemes. Work it!
Supporter Natalie Russell is getting ready to run the London Marathon. And she won’t be alone. The Bishop’s Stortford star is taking on her second marathon for us, with husband Ian – a veteran of races around the world – supporting her with gels and encouragement every step of the way. She won’t be hard to spot. Natalie is plotting some chicken-themed headgear for race day, while her sister, stationed around mile eight, will provide posters, hen-shaped cakes and other poultry-inspired surprises. “I’m not a natural runner,” admits Natalie, “but I like challenging myself.” Talk about plucky.
