| Two Shining Examples | In Conversation With Ben Garrod |
Meet Nicola – a timid girl at first who blossomed into the hen she was always destined to be. One who loved digging in the garden, enjoying dust baths and sitting on the patio of a summer evening.
Her keeper, John, told us the most wonderful stories about her, saying: “Nicola liked me digging a hole in the vegetable patch and her jumping into it; you had to put soil over her body just leaving her head out, and she sat there for ages. Once she got bored, she jumped out of the hole and ran full force into the kitchen and shook herself. Nicola loved to join either me or my partner when we worked from home, jumping on the table even before we started, and sat there most of the day with us, only leaving at times for something to eat, then returning.
“These hens bring so much joy to your life. They will become your world and when you lose one, yes, there are tears, but the joy you feel inside after you heal is amazing, knowing you gave them a safe, loving home. Our beautiful girl Nicola passed away peacefully on 1st October 2024 after a short illness. We were with her until the end.”
