The passing of a patron

Longstanding supporters of the BHWT will know that the Duchess of Richmond has been our patron for many years, having adopted several small BHWT flocks of hens herself.

She died at the marvellous age of 90 at her home in Goodwood on 13th June surrounded by her family. The Duchess was always an advocate for ‘the underdog’ and her life was filled with kindness and compassion for animals and humans alike.

She worked with us on several projects including a double page spread in the Daily Mail to highlight the joys of hen keeping and so we would like to pay our respects by thanking her for her years of patronage and support of laying hen welfare. May she rest in peace.

World’s oldest chicken!

Officials at the Guinness World Records have named a hen in the US the oldest in the world. Peanut, who lives with Marsi Parker Darwin in Michigan, is an incredible 21 years old!

According to Parker Darwin, Peanut acts like she doesn’t know she’s a chicken. She loves a cuddle and taking a ride inside someone's pocket if she can. Parker Darwin is hopeful that Peanut will live on for at least a few more years. Just incredible.

Earlybird Learning

This is becoming quite a regular slot in the magazine, seeing your gorgeous little ones swotting up on their chicken knowledge!

This issue features two-year-old Evan who, as mum Elizabeth tells us, loves looking after and feeding his grandma’s rehomed BHWT hens. Just adorable! To see your child featured here simply send a photo of them reading C&E to [email protected]

Did you know...

There’s a succulent plant affectionately called hens and chicks! They come in many colours and are so-named after their growing habits of producing multiple rosettes from a single mother succulent.
