lovers of chickens, celluloid and whacking great trophies. Back in spring we won People’s Choice Goldat the 2026 Smiley Charity Film Awards for a short flick celebrating two decades of hen rehoming. The film – produced and directed by Simon Moore, narrated by our patron Professor Ben Garrod – was voted the public’s favourite among no fewer than 22 finalists. We also received a generous £3,000 award. Thanks for voting! Movie stardom, eh? Yet another feather in our cap.
Not only are hens’ eggs miraculous packages of nutrition and deliciousness. They’re also safety conscious. Aristotle, no less, pondered the mysterious white cords, or chalazae, that extend from either side of the yolk. Lots of dodgy theories were mooted to explain their purpose, until eggheads in the 1930s cracked it. Turns out they’re tiny seatbelts, keeping the precious yolk safely centred and correctly oriented. Clunk click, little chick.
