Quail safe

Our Helping Quail project, in partnership with FAI Farms, is moving from research towards action, with China emerging as a possible testing ground.

About seven years ago Jane Howorth MBE was shown photographs of commercially farmed quail. Her response was immediate – one day, the British Hen Welfare Trust would do something to help these petite, long-overlooked hens. That promise is taking shape. Working in partnership, the British Hen Welfare Trust and animal-welfare consultancy FAI Farms are researching quail production across Asia, Europe and the Americas, speaking to producers and reviewing the science to build a practical roadmap for better welfare.

Who are FAI Farms?

FAI Farms specialises in turning animal-welfare science into practical improvements on farms. Working in partnership with the BHWT, its team is building a clearer picture of commercial quail production worldwide, speaking with producers and identifying where meaningful changes may be possible. “To support change we must align the science with what works practically for farmers on the ground,” says animal scientist and FAI Farms COO Murilo Quintiliano. “That means working collaboratively with farmers and others in the quail supply chain to really understand their challenges. Working with the BHWT, we can provide the knowledge and tools to drive positive change for them, and the birds they care for.”
