Read all about it!

Whenever our hens pop up in the media, it gives us a real lift. Every headline, every interview and every column inch helps spread the word that these hardworking girls deserve a place not just in our gardens, but in our hearts too. Over the past few months, we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy some wonderful coverage, and we hope it may have encouraged even more people to consider rehoming.

September 2025 – Charity Today

We were absolutely delighted to win the Animal Welfare Award at the National Charity Today Awards 2025. It was such a lovely moment for everyone who has helped build the BHWT over the past two decades – from our volunteers and adopters to supporters, staff and fundraisers. Charity Today recognised our “two decades of compassion and commitment”, which was a real honour. After more than one million hens rehomed, it meant a great deal to see the work of the whole BHWT family celebrated in this way.

October 2025 – BBC News

This heartwarming piece on the BBC News website told the story of a Wiltshire family who had recently adopted three hens through the BHWT and quickly found them becoming part of everyday life.

Mum Victoria described our hens as “affectionate, inquisitive and full of personality”, and put it beautifully when she said: “Everyone talks about the benefits of being out in nature, eating healthier and being kind — rehoming chickens does all three.”

Stories like this mean so much because they show exactly what we see every day: hens bringing companionship, routine, fresh air, laughter and a bottomless well of joy.

November 2025 – BBC Radio Scotland, Out of Doors

We were chuffed to feature on BBC Scotland’s Out of Doors, the much-loved programme exploring wildlife, the countryside and rural life.

We’ve been trying to get the BHWT on there for a while, so hearing friend of the charity and YouTuber Jude (@rewildingjude) speaking so warmly about life with hens he rehomed from us after we set the interview up was a real treat. Follow him on YouTube to learn more about what Jude does.

March 2026 – Farmers Weekly

Jane wrote a thoughtful and moving op-ed for Farmers Weekly in response to the DEFRA consultation on the future of cages.

It was a good chance to set out something we have always believed at BHWT: that improving hen welfare and supporting British farmers should always go hand in hand. Jane made the case that progress needs to be collaborative, fair and realistic, with farmers properly consulted and supported through any change that ultimately is implemented.

We were proud to see that message, and Jane’s story, published in such an influential industry title.

January 2026 – ITV West Country

A big thank you to Ginny, Louise, Hilary and the rest of the brilliant Bristol team, who helped make our ITV West Country news feature happen. The cameras joined us at a rehoming day and captured some lovely chats with adopters as our hens began their new lives.

This kind of regional TV coverage is worth its weight in gold. It shows rehoming as it really is — communal, lively, full of characters and kindness.

Could your rehoming story be featured in future?

Our PR lead Andy Hill would love to hear from you if you’d be happy to chat on camera about your hens, or be on call for upcoming similar broadcast opportunities. Email [email protected]

March 2026 – That’s Life! (Issue 12)

We were thrilled to see one of the UK’s leading women’s magazines feature the moving story of our Midlands volunteer Mehrun, whose hen Dotty helped her through a mental health crisis and inspired her to start helping out at her local rehoming centre.

Features like this in nationwide magazines remind everybody that hens do so much more than lay eggs for us. Given the chance, they bring comfort, companionship, routine and a sense of purpose — something our supporters and friends know all too well of course.
