| Dengie | The ‘Ber Months Are Here |
Whenever our hens pop up in the media it’s always a source of huge satisfaction. Every headline, every broadcast, every column inch helps spread the word that these creatures are entirely worthy of a spot in our back gardens – not to mention our hearts. Over the past few months, we’ve had some wonderful PR moments that we hope have inspired a few more people to rehome from us.

Our new patron Ben Garrod, Professor of Evolutionary Biology and Science Engagement at the University of East Anglia, gave a lively Q&A reminding us that hens are, in fact, living dinosaurs – the ultimate survivors of the most famous extinction event. Life, as they say, found a way.
July 2025 – My Weekly
This inspirational interview with our founder, Jane Howorth MBE, charts her journey from starting the charity at her kitchen table to rehoming our one millionth hen with His Majesty King Charles III. Jane also lifts the lid on future plans, including our pioneering farm advisory service.

July 2025 – BBC News
An interview with our very own Francesca Mapp blossomed into a widely read feature on the BBC News website. It spelled out just what hens need – a bit of space, a secure spot, and a caring owner to give these hardworking girls a peaceful retirement filled with TLC.
September 2025 – First News
This national children’s newspaper, with a readership of two million, featured BHWT volunteer Sarah Walker, a mum of three and a teacher. Sarah explained how hens have helped her children and pupils settle back into school life, proving that our girls are as good for wellbeing as they are for eggs.
September 2025 – Sunday Post
A series of rehomings across Scotland led to one of our biggest campaigns north of the border. The Sunday Post, Scotland’s best-loved weekend paper, ran a celebratory double-page spread highlighting our efforts – and paying tribute to our outstanding team of Scottish volunteers.
