On a chilly October morning in 2021, at the end of a shed, stood a naked hen with a large lump on the top of her head and another above her eye.
It’s rare we find hens in such condition, but Hedwig was not in great shape. A good job then that her fighting spirit was strong as she was taken to one of our volunteer-run special care units. Soon Hedwig was recuperating under the warmth of a heat lamp, eating special recovery feed and enjoying a sizeable dose of TLC!
An ear infection was quickly treated but the lumps were left alone while she regained her strength.
Within days, new feather quills began to sprout, and in one month, the change was astonishing. The lump beside her eye had vanished and the one on her head had shrunk dramatically.
Now, Hedwig is indistinguishable from the flock; a wonderful illustration of the amazing power of recovery hens have. Hedwig’s many Facebook followers have watched her transform and she is now the beautiful hen she was always meant to be.
