There has been a huge change in their appearance and the quality of their eggs are so much better too! We’ve noticed that the shells are much darker and harder, and the yolks are a lovely dark orange colour. On average, we get five to six eggs per day from the six hens.
Because we don't use all the eggs, we are able to give them away in return for donations to the BHWT through their Egg Club. Ours is called Evie’s Pretty Little Hens.
We have a basket on our gate and an honesty box so people can leave a donation. It’s a lovely thing to do because it means that our hens are directly helping the hens that are still in cages who will hopefully one day also experience a free-range retirement just like Skittles, Bellatrix Lestange, Bubbles, Squeak, Hyacinth Clucket and Peggy.
I also raise money through selling some little hen decorations I paint on my “Evie's Pretty Little Hens” Facebook page. When I began, my target was £50, now I’ve raised well over £2,000 through the sale of the wooden hens and my Egg Club!
